Rather than have different disks to install different versions, simply install Windows, and let the key determine what gets turned on or not. The worst part of it is that Microsoft actually has the tools to handle all of these situations much better.

As it stands, I really wish I could figure out how to permanently remove the option. If Microsoft actually gave you an equivalent, perpetual key when you upgraded using that method, it would be worth while. The Anytime Upgrade seems like a good idea, but the implementation is kind of a rip off.

If the product is 'upgraded' using Anytime Upgrade, however, the license holder is afterwards permitted to migrate the license to a new machine ONE TIME ONLY! Specific mention of that exists in the EULA, and if people are being advised to purchase and use Anytime Upgrade then they should also be warned thatr they are suffering a reduction to their legitimate entitlements if they do so!Īgreed.
A retail license entitles the license holder to 'migrate' the license to a new machine later on, as many times as is desired. I personally think that 'Anytime upgrade' should be avoided, if the Windows license held is a retail license and if the use of Anytime upgrade can be at all avoided. I think Windows Anytime Upgrade may be helpful to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. Your circumstance is a legitimate one, and if automatic activation fails you'll need only speak with an activation centre person and confirm to him/her that your copy of Windows is only on the one machine. If you need to telephone activate it's no big deal. (It's more a deterrent to people trying to misuse the license on multiple machines.) I'm unsure precisely what time period needs to elapse, but you can reasonably expect that after 6 months had elapsed automatic activation would work again. There is an 'activation counter' mechanism involved, but that gets reset at regular intervals. The license agreement allows you to move it to a different PC, but the activation servers don't automatically detect that you've moved it. That would mean only that you'd need to use the 'Activate by telephone' option and speak with a consultant to be stepped through the procedure for manually activating the new install. With respect to 'moving' your Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade license to your parents' PC, there is a possibility that automatic activation may fail afterwards, if not enough time has elapsed since you last used it to install and activate on the original PC. Using a Windows 7 Professional Retail Upgrade pack will be fine - it's the license upgrade you are paying for - but you would need to back up all your data, install clean using the Custom install procedure, and then install your programs again afterwards and restore your data.
According to that document, if a Windows 7 Upgrade pack is used on an existing Windows 7 install, it will only present you with the 'Upgrade install' option if that Windows 7 install is a Home Premium one. According to the documents made available from Microsoft: (WS.10).aspx You would be able to use the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade pack, but you would need to perform a 'Custom Clean' install with it, rather than an over the top 'In place upgrade' install.
